tree Dignity Through Water, Resilience Through Sanitation

Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH)

Access to safe water and proper sanitation is a fundamental human right and the bedrock of public health and sustainable development. ICCDI–Africa integrates WASH programs into its core climate and development agenda, particularly in vulnerable urban and peri-urban communities where climate change exacerbates water scarcity and sanitation challenges. In cities like Lagos, rapid urbanization and intensified flooding contaminate shallow wells, making clean water access a daily struggle for millions. Our interventions are designed to break this cycle of disease and disenfranchisement.

Our most recognized initiative is the Bottle Toilet Project, a pioneering circular economy model that transforms plastic waste into durable, affordable sanitation facilities. This project simultaneously tackles open defecation and plastic pollution, two of the most pressing environmental issues in Nigeria. We also conduct extensive hygiene education campaigns in schools, organize community-led clean-ups of blocked drainage channels, and advocate for equitable water governance that prioritizes the needs of the poor. By linking WASH with climate resilience, we reduce the spread of waterborne diseases like cholera and typhoid, strengthening community health and restoring dignity.
