Africa’s biodiversity is both a global treasure and a vital lifeline for local communities, providing food, medicine, and economic opportunities. Yet, it is under increasing threat from climate change, deforestation, and unsustainable practices. ICCDI–Africa advances biodiversity conservation through ecosystem restoration, reforestation campaigns, wildlife protection, and community-based natural resource management. We understand that conservation cannot succeed if it is imposed from the outside; it must be owned and led by the communities who depend on these resources.
Our approach integrates conservation with livelihood opportunities, ensuring that local populations benefit directly from protecting their environment. This includes promoting eco-tourism, developing sustainable value chains for non-timber forest products, and training community rangers. By linking biodiversity with climate resilience and sustainable development, we create a virtuous cycle: healthy ecosystems sequester more carbon and are more resilient to climate shocks, while the economic benefits from conservation provide a powerful incentive to protect them. ICCDI contributes to safeguarding ecosystems while reducing poverty and strengthening community stewardship.
At the International Climate Change Development Initiative (ICCDI-Africa), we are building a climate-smart generation by identifying local realities, engaging stakeholders, and co-developing sustainable solutions to secure Africa’s future.
