Sustainable Agriculture & Food Security

Agriculture remains the backbone of Africa’s economy, yet it is increasingly threatened by climate change. Erratic rainfall, prolonged droughts, and soil degradation are pushing millions of smallholder farmers to the brink of crisis. ICCDI–Africa promotes climate-smart agriculture (CSA) to ensure food security and sustainable livelihoods for the long term. Our work focuses on empowering smallholder farmers—especially women and youth, who constitute the majority of the agricultural workforce—with the knowledge and tools to adapt to a changing climate.
We implement practical, field-based training in soil health management, water-efficient farming (such as drip irrigation), crop diversification with drought-resistant varieties, and post-harvest technologies to reduce food loss. By creating model farms and supporting agri-business opportunities, we demonstrate that sustainable farming is also profitable. We are active members of regional advocacy platforms like the Climate-Smart Agriculture Youth Network (CSAYN), using our grassroots experience to influence national food policies. ICCDI is building resilient food systems that secure nutrition for Africa’s growing population while protecting the vital ecosystems that sustain us all.
